Air Force Space Command is venturing beyond the atmosphere and into the Twittersphere, the world of 140-character notes, or Tweets, about anything or nothing at all.

AFSPC is not the first Air Force organization to join Twitter, the popular Web site that allows users to send and receive short messages. The Air Force Public Affairs Agency has been Twittering since Oct. 7, and some bases have joined recently as well.

The New York Philharmonic’s “New York Moments” promised an evening of “iconic musical moments” from Gotham-themed Broadway and film. Visiting conductor Marvin Hamlisch obliged by assembling an 85-minute parade of star spots that mostly fulfilled the stated goal.The Tony/Oscar/Grammy/Emmy-winning composer conductor proved a self-effacing and good natured host for an evening that brought Broadway to the Philharmonic.

Joel Grey launched the proceedings with naturally enough his trademark “Wilkommen” (mixed with a bit of “Money Makes the World Go Round”).The 77-year-old “Cabaret” star was instantly rejuvenated as he twirled his cane, leered at patrons, grabbed Hamlisch for a bit of a two-step and planted himself on the lap of an unsuspecting female violist.

Flashing lights, talking crosswalks, and police stings against driver in crosswalks– it’s a welcome new world for pedestrians less than a year after a city committee recommended $700,000 in safety upgrades.I’m very grateful to the city for taking the time and helping to create an overall change in the relationship between pedestrians and drivers,” says activist Kevin Cox.

While he’s delighted by crosswalk and sidewalk improvements, including the new electronic gizmos, Cox says he’s particularly happy that police have begun staking out crosswalks and ticketing drivers who fail to yield.
